In 2002, Chili's Memphis General Manager and today Operations Director Dharam Rampersad was looking for a way to connect with his local community. Aware of the life-saving research happening at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital®, he and fellow managers came up with an idea. With the help of some crayons and chili pepper coloring sheets, they organized seven neighboring Chili's restaurants to raise $14,000 in support of St. Jude. Fifteen years later, that $14,000 has been multiplied 5,000 times. As of 2017, we have raised more than $70 million for St. Jude, and we were the first corporate partner to have a building on the hospital campus named in our honor.

Things You Didn't Know About Chili's Grill & Bar
How Chili's Grill & Bar Started
In 1967, a chili cook-off was conducted in Terlingua, Texas. A young entrepreneur was present at the event. He was known as Larry Lavine. It gave him the idea that he was inspired by all of the unusual and interesting forms of chili. He was inspired by the cook-off to develop his own chili recipe. In 1975, having spent several years perfecting his recipe, he established his first Chili's restaurant in Dallas, Texas.
New Chili’s With 2 Menu Items
The menu at the very first Chili's restaurant was quite straightforward. They kept a singular concentration on two menu items. These were hamburgers and chili. The restaurant's décor reflected the cuisine it served, and it was extremely popular. Chili's was the only such restaurant in the neighborhood, and customers flocked there to order their great burgers and chili. It earned rapid success.
Second Chili's Just Opened
It is quite uncommon for a new restaurant to become so successful that it can afford to add a second location within a single year. This was the situation with Chili's. 1976 saw the opening of their second site in Houston, Texas. This proved to be a fantastic decision, as the second restaurant became as popular with the Houston populace as the original establishment in Dallas.
Growth In the First 8 Years
The restaurant's first success was not an accident. Locals continued to find it more and more appealing. As soon as the second store opened, it became evident that there was a need for even more. In 1983, just eight years after the opening of the first Chili's restaurant, there were a total of eighteen outlets in operation, and the new chain was experiencing remarkable success. Chili's Was Bought By Norman Brinker
Norman Brinker is a legend in the field of fast-food chains. He could not help but observe that Chili's was an emerging restaurant business with huge potential for success. He made plans with Lavine to purchase the chain. This is the first time Chili's has changed ownership. The sale occurred in 1983.
Brinker Changed Menus
Following Brinker's acquisition of Chili's, the restaurant underwent significant adjustments. The expansion of the menu was among his initial actions. He added Buffalo wings, chicken sandwiches, salads, fajitas, and additional items to the menu. This was a wise decision on his side since the business had another growth spurt. His company, Brinker International, is the current owner of Chili's restaurant chain.
First Chili's Is a 7-Eleven
We wish we could say that the first Chili's restaurant still stands as a memorial to the firm, but this is not the case. The original Chili's restaurant was established in a renovated post office. The old Chili's was relocated, and there is now a 7-Eleven convenience store in its place. No harm was done, however, because Chili's was able to relocate to a new location with plenty of regular business, so nothing was lost.
Chili's and Their Love For Their Employees
Chili's Grill & Bar is one of those rare companies that genuinely care about the welfare of its employees. They have created a specific fund to support employees who have experienced a personal tragedy. It is known as the Brinker Family Fund and distributes $1 million annually to employees who have experienced natural disasters, death, or catastrophic sickness, either individually or in their immediate family. The funding for this specific assistance is provided by Chili's employees, who willingly deduct gifts from their paychecks.
